The 9th International Conference on Welding Science and Engineering (WSE2023) was successfully held in Harbin from July 24 to 27, 2023. This conference is jointly sponsored by National Key Laboratory of Material Structure Precision Welding and Connection of Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Laser Manufacturing and Material Modification of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Welding Branch of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (hereinafter referred to as Welding Branch). The International Conference on Welding Science and Engineering is a very important event in the field of welding technology research, more than 400 representatives from 11 countries, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, the Netherlands, Russia, India, Kazakhstan and China, attended the meeting.
Professor Lin Sanbao, executive chairman of the conference, presided over the opening ceremony. Professor He Peng, chairman of the conference, and Gong Water Conservancy, vice chairman of the welding branch, delivered opening speeches respectively.

At the meeting, Academician Wang Guoqing of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, Professor of Upadrasta Ramamurty of Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Professor Fujii of Hidetoshi of Osaka University of Japan, Professor Dongil Kwon of Seoul University of South Korea, Professor Ding Jun of National University of Singapore, Professor Li Hui-jun of Wollongong University of Australia and Professor Li Zhuguo of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Vice Chairman of Welding Branch, respectively made keynote reports, the development status of welding industry, the challenges in the development process and the future development trend are systematically introduced and analyzed. The meeting set up five major themes: welding process and metallurgy, welding numerical modeling and reliability, brazing and micro-nano connection, additive manufacturing, and high-performance material processing. Participants actively exchanged and discussed academic frontiers and scientific research achievements in relevant research fields through special academic reports, and jointly discussed the future development direction and multi-dimensional cooperation mode of welding science and engineering.

The conference elected 8 "outstanding contribution" scholars of WSE conference, namely Professor Zhang Jianxun, Professor Lei Yongping, Professor Lu Hao, Professor Murakawa Hidekazu, Professor Feng Jicai, Professor Wu Aiping, Professor Wu Chuansong and Professor Ninshu Ma, fully affirming their outstanding contributions in the field of WSE conference organization and academic exchange. Two "pioneer" scholars of WSE conference were selected, masakazu Professor Shibahara and Professor Qingyu Shi recognized their pioneering contributions in the field of welding numerical simulation. At the same time, the conference also selected "Outstanding Young Scholars" and "Outstanding Academic Posters". 13 graduate students and postdoctoral representatives of outstanding young scholars were awarded this honor, encouraging young scholars to continue to work hard for the development of welding science and technology and bravely climb the peak.

This conference provides a platform for technology sharing and exchange of ideas for domestic and foreign counterparts, strengthens the in-depth communication of welding researchers in the fields of scientific research and engineering application, and discusses the development direction and technical path of welding science and engineering. The successful holding of the WSE2023 also benefited from the strong support of more than ten domestic universities, scientific research institutes and enterprises. Welders at home and abroad gathered in Harbin for common development, which promoted the exchange and cooperation of international welding researchers in welding science and technology.
